Red Fisher, Dick Irvin On Jean Beliveau.



Longtime Montreal media men Red Fisher and Dick Irvin Jr. are beloved journalists not only because they have been around seemingly forever, and not only because they have so much inside knowledge about the game. First and foremost they are great story tellers, a lost art among today's journalists it seems.

Let's take a look at what these two hockey literature greats had to say about Jean Beliveau.

Red Fisher on Jean Beliveau:

So many great memories about this man, but the first one I have is the first road trip I made with the team at the start of the 1955-56 season, the first of five consecutive Stanley Cups the Canadiens were to win — an NHL record that is certain to stand for all time. After the game in Detroit, the entire team assembled for a party in a restaurant. “Boom Boom” Geoffrion talked quietly with his teammate.

“There’s the kid from The Star,” Geoffrion muttered. “It’ll be all over that paper tomorrow.”

“He’s with the team,” Béliveau said. “He’s one of us now. There won’t be anything in his paper about the party.”

“You sure?” Geoffrion asked.

“I’m sure,” Béliveau said.

I remember a time meeting Mr. Beliveau for an autograph session in Oshawa Ontario he was so genuine a man that when it was said the habs had left him of they're protected list the at he could still 20 years later at the time play better hockey then the current players Rest in peace Mr Beliveau
