Steve Begin

Unable to return form a serious hip injury, Calgary Flames left-winger Steve Begin retired from the NHL last week
The 35-year-old from Trois-Rivieres, Que., had 56 goals, 52 assists and 561 penalty minutes in 524 career games. Begin also played with the Montreal Canadiens, Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins and Nashville Predators.
Begin was a gritty depth player - a third liner at best though he was versatile enough to play all three forward positions. He was rugged on the forecheck and strong in the corners. He had decent speed but lacked agility. When he retrieved the puck he didn't have the hands or the vision to do much with it.
Coaches and teammates loved Begin for what he was - a team player who tried to make an impact - often literally - in whatever minutes he got in each game. He stuck up for his teammates and kept everyone on the ice honest.
