Martin Jones' Record Tying Start

Los Angeles Kings rookie Martin Jones is making the most of what even he realizes is a short chance.

The 23 year old undrafted goalie was recalled earlier this season when Kings superstar netminder Jonathan Quick was felled with an injury. The red-hot Jones has since supplanted Quick's regular back-up Ben Scrivens to become the interim starter.

With a 3-2 shootout victory over Colorado on Saturday December 21st, Jones secured his place in history by tying the NHL record for most consecutive wins from the start of a career by a goaltender. Jones is now 8-0-0 this season.

Jones is doing his best to keep everything in perspective knowing that when Quick returns he will resume his role as king of the crease in Los Angeles.

“I want to make sure I’m focused and prepared for the games, but also have some fun as well,” Jones said. “My job is to work hard in practice and be ready to play when called upon.”

Now I did say Jones tied the NHL record for most wins from the start of a career. So which NHL great did he equal? Patrick Roy? Maybe Dominik Hasek or Terry Sawchuk?

Try Bob Froese.

Froese was one of my favorite goalies in the 1980s (trust me, I didn't have many back then) and is underrated (and mostly forgotten) in history's eyes. But he was certainly no Hall of Famer. Here's a nice video tribute to Froese on YouTube.
