Great Moments In Hockey History: Hat Tricks For Crosby, Ovechkin
May 4, 2009: It was a spectacular display of one-upmanship. Two superstars at the height of their heated rivalry combined for an instant playoffs classic.
Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals and Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins each recorded a hat trick in Washington's 4-3 victory in Game 2 of their 2009 Eastern Conference Semifinal. It was the first playoff hat trick for each player.
This game marked only the fourth time that opposing players registered hat tricks in the same postseason game; Mark Messier (EDM) and Paul Reinhart (CGY) registered the first set of opposing hat tricks on April 14, 1983, Ray Ferraro (NYI) and Al Iafrate (WSH) followed on April 26, 1993 and Trevor Linden (VAN) and Joe Sakic (COL) had the other set on April 25, 1996
