A pretty neat occurrence is supposed to happen tonight in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The Carolina Hurricanes have called up Jared Staal from their American Hockey League farm team, the Charlotte Checkers. In doing so, the 'Canes will become just the fourth team in history to hit the ice with three brothers on the roster.
Jared, making his NHL debut, will join established NHL stars Eric and Jordan Staal for Carolina's battle against the New York Rangers. Of course, the New York Rangers usually rely heavily on the 4th Staal brother, Marc, but he has missed much of the season with an eye injury and will not play tonight.
The other teams to ice three brothers in a game:
- In the 1940s the Chicago Blackhawks were powered by the high-flying Bentley brothers Doug and Max. Brother Reg joined them for 11 games, scoring only one goal. The assists went to Doug and Max, making it the only goal in NHL history scored and assisted by three brothers.
- That's a pretty amazing stat considering in the early 1980s the Quebec Nordiques iced a line consisting of the three Stastny brothers - Peter, Anton and Marian. Marian did not always play with the other two, however.
- The St. Louis Blues employed the battlin' Plager brothers in the 1970s. All three were defensemen - Bob, Barclay, and Bill - who were known more for their toughness than their finesse. Their father Gus was nicknamed Squirrel because he raised three nuts!

Hey Joe - In the very first NHL game the Stastnys played together, Peter scored a goal assisted by Marian and Anton. I haven't checked the rest of the games they played together yet, by while the Bentleys were first they aren't the only ones.

I just finished going through the games, and by my count the three Stastnys combined on 68 goals together including playoffs - 26 by Anton, 25 by Marian and 17 by Peter.
Also, the Bentleys had a second combined goal in 1943 - Doug scored from Max and Reggie on Jan 21.
