This Day In Hockey History: Sept 4th
1946 - Clarence Campbell became president of the National Hockey League, replacing Red Dutton
1972 - Team Canada defeated USSR 4-1 in Toronto in Game 2 of Summit series.
1978 - Sam Pollack resigned as General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens, after 14 years with the team. He was replaced by Irving Grundman.
1979 - Bernie Geoffrion was named new coach of the Montreal Canadiens, replacing Scotty Bowman. He later resigned in December after 30 games.
1990 - Montreal Canadiens traded Claude Lemieux to New Jersey in exchange for Sylvain Turgeon.
1990 - Montreal traded Craig Ludwig to the New York Islanders in exchange for Gerald Diduck.
2003 - Goaltender Mike Richter announced his retirement, after 14 NHL seasons with the New York Rangers.
