Mickey Redmond was one of the NHL's top snipers. In fact, following the Summit Series Redmond exploded to score 52 goals in the NHL season, becoming the first Detroit Red Wing in history to do so. The two time Stanley Cup champ who was once traded for Frank Mahovlich likely would be a bigger name in NHL history had injuries not severely shortened his impressive career.
Redmond unfortunately didn't get to see much ice in the series. The former Montreal Canadiens forward was selected to play in the opening game in the Montreal Forum. Perhaps coach Harry Sinden was hoping Redmond would have a little extra fire in his belly since he was getting a chance to play in front of his old fans. But the Russians embarrassed Canada badly in that game, and lineup changes were made. Mickey Redmond, who also suffered from a viral infection while in Europe, never made it back into the lineup as Team Canada went with largely veteran players.
Nonetheless, Mickey Redmond is a proud member of Team Canada 1972
