New Yorkers love Hockey. Many greats have played on Broadway - most notably Frank Boucher, Bill and Bun Cook, Jean Ratelle, Rod Gilbert, Phil Esposito, Walt Tkaczuk, Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier. Yet no one, with the possible modern except of Messier, is more popular with Manhattan fans than goalie Eddie Giacomin.
Eddie Giacomin, like Jacques Plante and Tony Esposito were class acts guarding the hockey net from that black object, the puck. Simply put, the oldtimers of NHL hockey inspired future generations of puck stoppers, and an era of the masked men. Giacomin was combative, a roamer, and above all he was adored by fans with his sparkling personality. Plante and Giacomin were my role models as a kid, as I donned the pads for minor hockey and later played with men that were far better than my age group with the politics in Minor Hockey that frustrated good players like myself. To the legends of yesterday, you played for the love of the game that went greedy soon after Gretzky, etc.
