1938 - Former NHL player King Clancy made his debut as a referee when Chicago defeated the Canadiens 3-2 in Montreal.

1986 - Buffalo's Scotty Bowman stepped down as head coach of the Sabres to concentrate as GM of the team. Craig Ramsay was named as the new coach.

1990 - Chicago's rookie goaltender Dominik Hasek played in the first game of his NHL career, as the Blackhawks tied 1-1 against the Whalers, at Hartford.
