This Day In Hockey History - October 10th
1979 - Edmonton Oilers' rookie Wayne Gretzky played in his first NHL game.
1979 - Kevin Lowe scored the Edmonton Oilers' first NHL goal, but the Oilers lost 4-2 in their first NHL game, at Chicago.
1979 - Quebec Nordiques' Real Cloutier became just the second player in NHL history to score a hat trick in his first career game, a 5-3 loss to the Atlanta Flames. All three goals came in the third period.
1980 - Edmonton Oilers retire the jersey of #3 Al Hamilton.
1987 - Hartford's Doug Jarvis played in his 964th consecutive game, an NHL record, in a 6-2 Whalers loss to the Rangers.
1998 - Brian Sutter became the first man in NHL history to win 300 games as a coach after also scoring 300 goals as a player.
