This is Brian Propp, one of the most underrated players of the 1980s. He was the answer to a particularly hard question on GreatestHockeyLegends.com Twitter Trivia on Saturday night.
I bet you did not know that Brian Propp is the highest scoring left winger in Stanley Cup playoffs history? His 148 points puts him ahead of Brendan Shanahan (131), Bobby Hull (129), Luc Robitaille (127), John Tonelli (115) and Dickie Moore (110). Also surprisingly high on the list, Geoff Courtnall ranks 7th with 109 points.
Propp played in 5 Stanley Cup finals, but never once sipped champagne from the mug. To go through that type of heartbreak must be tough. He went to the finals three times with Philadelphia, and once each late in his career with Boston and Minnesota.
That was one of 5 questions featured on Twitter Trivia, played during the first half of the Tampa Bay/Boston game 1 on Saturday night. Here's the other questions and answers:
- Who has the best career plus/minus record in Stanley Cup history? Answer - Guessing at members of the high scoring 1980s Edmonton Oilers dynasty teams would have been wise, as Oilers hold the top 5 spots. But it is none other than Charlie Huddy who ranks highest with a career +82. Jari Kurri (73), Randy Gregg (71), Wayne Gretzky (67) and Glenn Anderson (63) round out the top 5.
- Who is the all time Stanley Cup playoffs leader in power play goals? Answer - Brett Hull has 38 career PP tallies. Probably no one would be surprised that Mike Bossy, Dino Ciccarelli and Wayne Gretzky are right up there, but I was surprised to see Nicklas Lidstrom in 5th place.
- Who was the top scorer in Stanley Cup playoff games in the 1990s? I was surprised this one was not immediately obvious. But Mario Lemieux did indeed lead the way, followed by Mark Messier, Sergei Fedorov, Jaromir Jagr and Brett Hull
- After Martin Brodeur, who led all goaltenders in playoff wins between 2000 and 2010? None other than Chris Osgood, the least respected three time Stanley Cup champion goaltender in hockey.
