Sheppard was recently honoured for his lifetime passion. Not hockey, but ducks.
Ducks Unlimited named him as the 2009 recipient of the Lieutenant Governor's Greenwing Conservation Award. It is an award to recognize efforts to conserve wetlands in Saskatchewan.
After retiring from pro hockey, Sheppard moved back to North Battleford, Saskatchewan in 1983. He has been volunteering to the charity for over 25 years. He has been instrumental in fundraising campaigns, bringing in over $2.5 million by selling autographed jerseys of his hockey pals.
