Mikita's Unconventional 2 on 1

The 1972 Summit Series provided many unforgettable moments, but there is one little known memory that Stan Mikita and Brian Glennie will never forget.

The veteran Mikita (who only got into 2 Summit games) and youngster Glennie (0 games) formed an unlikely bond that September. A couple of days before the opening game in Montreal neither was named to the opening day roster. It was no surprise for Glennie, but Mikita was shocked.

A few of the spare players decided to drown their sorrows at a local watering hole, but Mikita and Glennie paid for it the next day at practice.

Glennie tells the story to Ross Brewitt for his book Into The Empty Net.

"Friday morning practice, we were going through one on ones and right off the bat, I drew Stash (Mikita). He comes weaving down the ice and just when he gets real close he pukes. Yeah, almost yarped on my skates. Man, I jumped out of the road, and he waltzed without missing a step and popped one behind Eddie Johnston. Dennis Hull said it was a hell of a move to use on me.

"When we get back to the regular NHL, our home opener is against the Hawks. Wouldn't you know it, I get the firsst two on one of the game . . . Stan and Cliff Koroll, I think. Anyway, I'm trying to stay between them until help comes . . . and you know Stan, he's not afraid to move close to you hoping you'd make a play on him, then he'd just stick it between your feet to the other man. So every time he gives me that little move, I'd back off, still trying to keep them separated. finally, figuring he's running out of room, he steps to the side and zips one top corner. I'm realling burning about the goal and as we leave the ice, Stan's getting high fives and says to me, "Whatta you think I was going to do - barf on ya, again."
