Classic Snap Shot: Jozef Golonka

Ask anyone in Slovakia, and they will tell you that this is one of the countries' iconic sporting images:

It is a picture of a very joyous Jozef Golonka, with the Russian giant Alexander Ragulin at the other end of the emotional spectrum. The Czechoslovakians had just defeated their bitter rivals, with Golonka scoring the insurance goal in the 4-2 victory.

The game was played in the 1968 Olympics. Though the Soviets would still win gold, the Czechoslovakians won something greater, scoring a great victory over their communist oppressors.

this story is not only error was in the Czech Republic but also in Slovakia.

Czechoslovakia was a country of two nations - Czechs and Slovaks. in 1993, Czechoslovakia split into separate Czech and Slovakia. Jozef Golonka is Slovak

Thanks for the catch. If you clicked through to the article on Golonka, the authors clearly hailed Golonka as a Slovakian great.
