The NHL trading deadline as we know it originated in 1980. Since then we have see 374 deadline day trades involving 676 players and 225 draft picks. Here's a year by year breakdown of the numbers.
The media coverage over the years certainly has grown to near ridiculous proportions. At least 40 hours of live television coverage and analysis will focus on this year's deadline trades, with TSN, RDS, Sportsnet, The Score and NHL Network all devoting significant time commitments.
In addition, hockey fans will turn to the Internet. Last season 1.4 million unique visitors accessed 17 million pages at NHL.com, a 62% increase over average February traffic, and a 26% increase over 2007's trade deadline day.
I am certain TSN, ESPN, Spector, Kuklas Korner, Illegal Curve and James Mirtle will see significant traffic spikes as well.
