WJC Memories: 1988

Following Punch Up In Piestany, Canada redeemed itself in the most volatile of situations. The 1988 World Junior Hockey Championships were held in Moscow for the final time in the Cold War.

Canada was captained by none other than Theoren Fleury, who was front and center in the 1987 brawl. All players had their suspensions lifted, enabling Fleury, Greg Hawgood, Chris Joseph and Jimmy Waite to play.

Canada also featured Rob Brown, Adam Graves, Joe Sakic, Mark Recchi, Trevor Linden, Eric Desjardins and Sheldon Kennedy.

Canada finished with a near perfect 6-0-1 record, including a tough 3-2 win over the Sergei Fedorov and Alexander Mogilny powered Soviets. That record gave Canada the tournament gold medal.

Other notable players in the 1988 tournament included Robert Reichal for Czechoslovakia, Teppo Numminen for Finland, and John LeClair, Mike Modano, Jeremy Roenick and Mathieu Schneider for Team USA.
