Big Year For Martin Brodeur A Look At 2008-09's Milestones

It promises to be a tremendous year for Martin Brodeur.

Brodeur needs just 14 wins to pass Patrick Roy for the most wins by a goalie in NHL history. He's won in excess of 40 games in 7 of the last 10 seasons, so it's a pretty safe bet that he'll catch Roy, perhaps by Christmas.

But Brodeur is chasing an even bigger milestone this season.

With 7 shutouts this season, Brodeur will tie Terry Sawchuk for the most shutouts of all time. Sawchuks 103 career shutouts was once thought to be one of the most untouchable records in hockey history. Six times in his career Brodeur has had 9 or more shutouts in a season, including an amazing 12 just 2 seasons ago.

Shutouts are harder to get than wins, so Brodeur may have to wait another season to catch Sawchuk. But it is only a matter of time.

There's another milestone Brodeur can achieve this season. If he appears in 32 games, he will join Patrick Roy as the only goaltenders to have played in 1000 regular season games. 62 game appearances will see him best Roy, who leads at 1029. Since Brodeur has averaged over 70 games played each season since 1995.
