Gretzky vs. Montana

There is an interesting story developing in the California high school football scene:

"The sons of Wayne Gretzky, former National Hockey League great, and of Joe Montana, the National Football League Hall of Fame quarterback, are among four competitors for the position of quarterback at Oaks Christian school, a private high school just outside of Los Angeles with a national ranking in the sport.

Trevor Gretzky, the 15-year-old third child of Wayne and Janet Gretzky, is up against Nicholas Montana, a 6-foot-2 junior, who recently enrolled at the private Westlake Village school, and two other star athletes."

Chris Wattie of the National Post interviews the high school football coach Bill Redell, a former Canadian Football Leaguer with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Trevor Gretzky looks to be a long shot for the varsity team.

"He said Trevor Gretzky, a sophomore, is still learning the game and is unlikely to become his starting quarterback. "But he's an outstanding kid; outstanding potential," Mr. Redell boomed enthusiastically. "He's still developing, but he's going to be a good one, I can tell."

Wattie adds:

"He said Trevor Gretzky will probably become the starting quarterback on the school's freshman-sophomore team."

Whoever ends up calling the plays for the varsity team will likely be throwing the ball to the son of another famous father. Actor/Singer Will Smith's son Trey is a star wide receiver.
