Taylor-Made King Leaves For Texas

Can you imagine Jean Beliveau not associated with the Montreal Canadiens. Or Darryl Sittler with the Maple Leafs. Or Lanny McDonald with the Calgary Flames.

You can't, can you?

Los Angeles Kings fans are now facing the same unthinkable situation regarding Dave Taylor.

The King's let Taylor's contract expire on June 30, and apparently at least one party is not interested in a return. The 51 year old Taylor has been with the Kings his entire professional life. Drafted by the Kings in 1975, Taylor was a 5 time all star and team captain of the Kings in a 17 year career spanning a team record 1111 games. He would serve in the Kings front office since his retirement in 1994, including 9 seasons as the team's general manager.

Last season Taylor served as the team's director of amateur development. The LA Times suggest the Kings were going to increase his role this season. Perhaps this makes the split Taylor's choice.

The Times also say it is expected he will soon join the Dallas Stars in some sort of front office capacity. Taylor has only said that his lifetime with the Kings was "very rewarding" and that he is "looking to a new challenge."

Here's some cool old school memories of Dave Taylor:
