Gump Worsley was definitely one of the all time greats, as his inclusion in the Hockey Hall of Fame obviously suggests. But had he not been released from the New York Ranger "jailhouse" and joined the Montreal Canadiens, its possible he'd be remembered only as a good goalie on a lousy team, much like contemporary Al Rollins. Rollins was the Hart Trophy winner in 1954, edging out Gordie Howe and Rocket Richard despite winning only 12 games. That's pretty much reflective of Worsley's days in Manhattan.
